What technologies does Leanwave work with?
RFID is one of our core areas of expertise, but it is not the only technology we work with. Depending on the process, we can combine RFID, identification hardware, software, camera technology, AI and other automation tools. The technology follows the operational requirement, not the other way around.
How do you determine which technology is right for my use case?
We start by understanding your process, existing infrastructure, operational requirements and objectives. From there, we assess which technology – or combination of technologies – can deliver the greatest practical value without introducing unnecessary complexity.
Can Leanwave integrate with our existing systems?

Can your solutions be customised to our processes?
Yes. Every project starts with your existing operation. We analyse the process, identify where additional visibility or automation would create value and then design the solution around those requirements.
What is RFID?
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It allows tagged objects to be identified wirelessly using radio waves.
RFID systems operate across different frequency ranges. For many of our applications, we work with UHF RFID, or Ultra-High Frequency RFID. UHF is particularly well suited to applications where multiple tagged items need to be identified quickly and without direct line of sight, often over distances of several metres.
A passive UHF RFID tag contains a chip and an antenna but does not require its own battery. Energy transmitted by an RFID reader activates the tag, allowing its stored identification data to be communicated back to the reader.
Depending on the application, Leanwave can also work with other RFID frequencies and identification technologies.
What can be tracked with RFID?
RFID can be used to identify and track a wide variety of physical assets and products.
In textile applications, specialised RFID tags can be integrated into garments, linen, workwear, mops and other reusable textile products. Other tag formats are available for applications involving boxes, equipment, assets, metal surfaces and other materials.
The correct tag depends on the material, environment and required read performance.

Can RFID work without line of sight?
Yes. RFID does not generally require direct line of sight between the reader and tag. Depending on the application and environment, multiple tagged items can also be identified simultaneously.
Can RFID tags withstand industrial washing, heat or harsh environments?
Yes, provided the correct RFID tag is selected.
Textile-service environments expose tags to heat, chemicals, mechanical pressure and repeated washing. Leanwave supplies RFID tags specifically designed for industrial laundry applications and helps determine the appropriate tag and attachment method for each textile and process.
How many items can be identified at once?
That depends on the RFID system, tag type, reader configuration, antenna setup, item density and operating environment.
Rather than specifying a theoretical maximum, we design and test the reading setup around the actual process to ensure the required performance can be achieved before full implementation.
Can RFID be used on metal or other difficult materials?
Yes. RFID performance is affected by materials such as metal and liquids, but specialised tags and system designs are available for these environments.
We assess the object, material and operating conditions before recommending the appropriate solution.
How does a typical Leanwave project start?

We discuss your current operation, the problems you want to solve and the systems already in place. Where appropriate, we then analyse the environment on site before developing and testing a suitable solution.

Yes. For applications where performance should be validated before a wider rollout, we can conduct pilot projects or proof-of-concept testing under realistic operating conditions.
Can you test the solution in our actual operating environment?
Yes. For many projects, we recommend an on-site assessment followed by testing in the real operating environment. This allows us to validate system performance and identify potential challenges before a wider implementation.
